Japanese carmaker Toyota, the world’s top seller, lags behind in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segments. In 2024, Toyota's total sales, including brands like Daihatsu, Hino, and Lexus, reached 10.8 million units, a 4% decrease year-on-year. Group production fell by 8% to 10.6 million vehicles.
Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales increased by 21% to 4.1 million units, and mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) deliveries grew over three-fold to 94,810 units. PHEV and BEV sales rose by 23% to 153,829 units and by 34% to 139,892 units, respectively, making up only 2.7% of total group deliveries.
Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) sales declined by 55% to 1,778 units due to high operating costs and limited infrastructure. Toyota, facing a class action lawsuit in California over alleged misleading communication around its FCEV Mirai, has introduced a 70% discount for the Mirai XLE model in the state.
