Boden, Sweden – Stegra, formerly H2 Green Steel, is making significant strides in establishing the world's first commercial-scale "fossil-free" steel mill near the Arctic Circle. This ambitious project aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2030, a move expected to eliminate 7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Â
The facility will utilize a 690 MW electrolyser to generate green hydrogen, replacing coal in the iron ore reduction process and achieving a 95% lower carbon footprint. Electric Arc Furnaces powered by renewable electricity will further ensure sustainable production. The project has secured €6.5 billion in funding, including a €250 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, and boasts over 20 binding long-term agreements with major global brands like IKEA, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volvo Group, signalling strong market demand. Â
