Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and US-based renewable energy company Hecate are collaborating on an integrated green hydrogen production project to support Tosyali Algeria’s iron and steel industry. The initiative was discussed during a meeting at Sonatrach’s General Directorate headquarters, attended by Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi, Hecate CEO David Wilhelm, Tosyali Algeria Board Member Alp Topçuoğlu, and several senior executives.
This project builds on studies and agreements established in 2024, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Sonatrach and Hecate in April 2024 to assess the feasibility of a renewable energy production facility in Algeria. Additionally, an MoU signed between Sonatrach and Tosyali in July 2024 explores hydrogen production using renewable energy to develop "green steel" at Tosyali’s complex.
Sonatrach stated that a new MoU is expected to be signed between Sonelgaz, Hecate, and Tosyali to finalize the initiative, which will be carried out in two phases. The project aligns with Algeria’s push to develop sustainable industrial solutions while supporting Tosyali’s transition to eco-friendly steel production. It marks a significant step in the country’s green energy transition and industrial sustainability efforts.
