In the first quarter of 2024, the Freeport of Riga increased transshipment of mining and metals products by 39.7% year-on-year, reaching 259.9 thousand tons. Transshipment of steel raw materials (scrap, metals, ferroalloys, ore) grew by 37.2% year-on-year over the three months to 223.5 thousand tons, while finished steel products saw a 57.6% year-on-year increase to 36.4 thousand tons.
During January-March 2024, the port of Riga handled 4.71 million tons of cargo, a 10.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This decline was attributed to a sharp drop in coal and coke handling by 99.5% year-on-year to 4.4 thousand tons, as well as an 81.9% year-on-year decrease in crushed stone transshipment to 40.3 thousand tons, and a 38.1% year-on-year reduction in oil handling to 165.9 thousand tons.
In 2023, the port of Riga handled 516.7 thousand tons of steel raw materials, 498.6 thousand tons of ore, and 75.7 thousand tons of finished steel products. Overall, Ukraine cargo transshipment decreased by 20.1% compared to 2022, reaching 18.79 million tons.
