Rebranded EmsteelThe Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has officially commenced commercial operations of the fourth unit at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates. This milestone marks the full operational capacity of the facility, which now generates 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, supplying up to 25% of the UAE's electricity needs.
The Barakah plant, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, features four APR-1400 reactors, each with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts. The first three units began operations in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively. With the addition of the fourth unit, the plant is expected to significantly contribute to the UAE's decarbonization goals, preventing an estimated 24.2 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
This development aligns with the UAE's commitment to clean energy and positions the nation as a leader in nuclear energy, supporting its 2030 climate objectives. The Barakah plant also plays a crucial role in helping local companies, including Emirates Steel, produce greener products, enhancing their competitive edge in the market.
