Singapore’s Meranti Green Steel has announced plans to construct a green steel plant in Thailand, with an annual capacity of up to 2.5 million tons of low-carbon hot-rolled coils. The facility will be located in the IRPC Eco-Industrial Zone in Rayong province, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and operations slated to start by mid-2028. CEO Sebastian Langendorf stated that the plant will utilize a combined process involving 80-90% natural gas and green hydrogen, aiming to significantly reduce CO2 emissions to 600-700 kg per ton of steel initially, with plans to lower this to under 200 kg in the future. Meranti has identified regions for raw material supply and signed agreements indicating strong market interest in low-carbon steel despite current challenges in the global steel industry.
