India plans to launch a national green steel mission by December 2024, aiming to promote sustainable steel production. The initiative, modeled after the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will define green steel products in October to stimulate production. Currently, only 10-20% of government steel purchases qualify as green, but this is expected to rise. The government may reallocate approximately ₹30 billion ($356.8 million) from previous incentive schemes to support green steel production. As steel consumption surges, the government is also reviewing its national steel policy and scrap policy to enhance decarbonization efforts in the sector.
