Greensteel Australia has partnered with Danieli to develop a groundbreaking 100% hydrogen-powered rolling mill, set to be the first of its kind globally. The facility, which will produce 600,000 tonnes of steel annually, will be located in New South Wales and aims to establish a new standard for zero-emissions steel production. Operations are expected to begin by late 2026.
Danieli's CEO, Giacomo Mareschi, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of sustainable steelmaking. Greensteel Australia's President, Mena Ibrahim, highlighted the project’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices. The mill will utilize a reheating furnace powered entirely by green hydrogen, eliminating reliance on fossil fuels and significantly reducing NOx emissions.
This innovative facility will primarily produce rebar for the Australian construction market and will incorporate advanced technologies to maximize production efficiency. The partnership reflects a significant step towards achieving global climate goals, as iron and steel production is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions.
