The Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have jointly proposed to the European Union to ban scrap imports from Russia to hinder the country from funding its war against Ukraine. This proposal includes banning imports of ferrous metals, copper, and aluminum waste. The EU's imports of these products from Russia mainly pass through Lithuania; however, Lithuania cannot independently restrict or ban Russian scrap imports due to regulations under the Basel Convention and the Waste Transport Regulation. Additionally, the EU has imposed sanctions against Russia, setting a quota for pig iron imports and extending the slab import quota period until the end of September as part of its 12th package of sanctions.
