A Chinese battery manufacturer is exploring the establishment of a 60 GWh battery gigafactory in the West Midlands near Coventry. This potential gigafactory, set to be one of the largest in the UK, aims to incorporate a recycling unit capable of repurposing car batteries for household appliance use. The investment of £1.2 billion for this project is subject to substantial UK subsidies, potentially derived from a £4.5 billion fund designated for critical manufacturing sectors such as automotive. Initially, the plan involves constructing a 20 GWh factory with a cost of £1.2 billion, with future expansion to reach 60 GWh. The initiative is projected to generate approximately 6,000 jobs and create additional opportunities within the supply chain, significantly influencing the local automotive industry and economy.
