Chile's National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported today that copper production reached 420,000 metric tons in May 2024, marking a 3.1% increase from the previous month and a 5.6% rise from May 2023. The growth is attributed to contributions from new operations and expanded capacity at Collahuasi and Los Pelambres mines. Copper prices have fluctuated in recent weeks, but the world’s top producer remains a key supplier amid global efforts to enable energy transitions. Government officials emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent output and minimizing disruptions. Despite the progress, concerns linger about potential water scarcity and regulatory delays affecting future projects. The Chilean Mining Ministry also noted that exploration permits had increased 7% year-on-year, reflecting continued investment interest in the country’s copper sector, particularly amid high long-term demand forecasts tied to global electrification.
