Nigeria Signs Partnership with Chinese Firms for New Steel Plant

The Nigerian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese companies, including Luan Steel Holding Group, to establish a new steel plant in Nigeria. This initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to revitalize the country's steel industry and enhance industrialization efforts.

A delegation led by the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, and the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, visited China to discuss the project. The partnership also includes plans to produce military hardware at the Ajaokuta Steel Plant, which is crucial for addressing national security challenges.

The Nigerian government is seeking N35 billion in funding from financial institutions to revive the dormant Ajaokuta Steel Company and restart iron rod production. Officials expressed optimism that this collaboration will attract significant foreign investment, create job opportunities, and position Nigeria as a key player in the global steel market. The government aims to commence commercial steel production before the end of President Tinubu's administration, signaling a renewed commitment to developing the local steel sector.
