Brazil Launches Anti-Dumping Probe on Chinese Steel Wire Rope

Brazil has initiated an official anti-dumping investigation on imports of steel wire rope (SWR) from China. The investigation was requested by local producer Belgo Mineira Bekaert Artefatos de Arames in January, arguing there is sufficient evidence of damage to its performance and domestic production due to surging imports of the product from China.

According to a document from Brazil's foreign trade secretariat Secex/MDIC, the investigation will cover steel wire rope imports classified under NCM codes 7312.10.10, 7312.10.90, and 7312.90.00. The period of analysis for dumping and injury will be from July 2022 to June 2023.Belgo Mineira Bekaert, the petitioner, claims that Chinese SWR imports have increased significantly in recent years, capturing a growing share of the Brazilian market. The company alleges these imports are being sold at dumped prices, causing material injury to the domestic industry.

Brazil's move comes amid a broader trend of rising trade tensions and protectionist measures targeting Chinese exports. Several other countries, including the United States and European Union, have also launched anti-dumping investigations against a range of Chinese steel products in recent months.

The outcome of Brazil's investigation could result in the imposition of anti-dumping duties on Chinese SWR imports if the authorities determine the product is being dumped and causing injury to the local industry. Interested parties will have the opportunity to participate in the investigation and provide data to defend their interests.
