Indian green hydrogen and derivatives producer AM Green has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Coal India Limited (CIL) for the long-term procurement of 4.5 gigawatts of renewable electricity. The agreement includes plans for 2.5-3 GW of solar power and 1.5-2 GW of wind energy, with projects expected to be developed in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and southern states.
The renewable power will support electrolysers producing green hydrogen and green ammonia across AM Green’s projects, with pumped hydro storage ensuring a stable energy supply. The company aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030, equivalent to 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen, representing one-fifth of India’s total green hydrogen production target.
CIL chairman P M Prasad emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, noting that while coal remains a primary energy source, the firm is taking a proactive role in India’s transition to greener energy solutions.
India's government is optimistic about reducing renewable energy costs for green hydrogen, with new and renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi highlighting its importance in the country's vision to become a developed nation by 2047.
To support the transition, New Delhi recently launched a green hydrogen certification scheme to ensure the country produces hydrogen that meets international sustainability standards.
