Haulage companies specializing in steel transportation in Western Europe are currently facing challenges in securing orders despite having ample capacity. The situation has reversed from a year ago when there was a shortage of drivers and high demand.
The increase in road tolls, particularly in Germany, has significantly raised transport costs, impacting small and medium-sized transport companies.
These companies have had to increase their fees to cover costs, but now find it difficult to lower prices to attract jobs. The steel processing sector could face significant issues if some haulers exit the market due to these extra costs.
Despite the current weak order activity along the steel value chain, transport prices are not expected to drop significantly as haulers need to cover their high operational costs.
