Brazilian mining company Vale has finalized negotiations with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Demonstration Office to initiate the first phase of an industrial-scale iron ore briquette plant in Louisiana. The project has secured $3.8 million from the DOE for engineering studies and public engagement through 2025, with potential funding of up to $282.9 million over the project's lifespan until 2031.
The plant aims to produce Vale’s innovative iron ore briquettes, designed for direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year and room for expansion. Located along the Mississippi River, the facility will facilitate access to current and potential U.S. market users. This initiative aligns with Vale's commitment to reduce net emissions by 15% by 2035 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In September, Vale partnered with Midrex Technologies to promote the use of these briquettes in direct reduction plants.
