Several American steel producers, including Steel Dynamics, Nucor Corporation, and US Steel, have formally requested the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) to launch an anti-dumping investigation into imports of corrosion-resistant flat products (CORE) from ten countries. The countries named in the petition include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, the UAE, and Vietnam.
The petitioners are also seeking an investigation into countervailing duties for these imports from Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Vietnam. They argue that these imports have significantly harmed the US steel industry, with a reported 57% increase in CORE imports from these countries between the first half of 2023 and the same period in 2024, rising from less than 1.25 million tonnes to nearly 2 million tonnes.
The United Steelworkers (USW) union has expressed support for the petition, emphasizing the need for protective measures to safeguard domestic producers against unfair competition.
