The UK's Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has recommended extending the existing steel safeguard measures, which impose tariffs on steel imports above certain quotas, for an additional two years until June 2026.
The TRA's review found that allowing the safeguards to expire in June 2024 could lead to a surge in steel imports that would seriously harm the UK steel industry.Â
Steel production in the UK decreased by 6.5% to 5.6 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022, and by 15.6% in 2022 compared to 2021. The TRA concluded that extending the safeguards is necessary to protect the UK steel industry from the threat of increased imports.
