In 2024, the Ukrainian market for steel products used in mechanical engineering experienced a significant growth of 25-30 percent. This recovery follows a gradual improvement in the sector since 2023, driven by increased demand from key industries, including the defense-industrial complex.
The market for metal rolling in mechanical engineering reached approximately 140-145 thousand tons in 2024. Domestic producers supplied 55-60 thousand tons of special steel grades, while imports accounted for 85 thousand tons. The growth was supported by state-funded enterprise development programs and foreign grants, enabling companies to modernize equipment and enhance production capabilities.
Logistical challenges, such as reliance on European ports and high road transport costs, continue to impact the market. However, the defense-industrial complex remains a primary driver of demand, ensuring the sector's resilience and importance in Ukraine's industrial landscape.
