Ukraine is poised to play a crucial role in helping the European steel industry decarbonize. With one of the world’s largest reserves of magnetite ore, Ukraine can produce high-quality raw materials for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production. Companies like Metinvest and Ferrexpo are already planning significant projects to supply DRI pellets and concentrate.
Before the war, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih had announced a project to build a pelletizing plant, which is expected to resume post-war. Additionally, Ukraine’s potential to produce green steel using electric arc furnaces and renewable energy sources positions it as a future leader in low-carbon steel production. This shift will not only contribute to the decarbonization of the European steel industry but also support Ukraine’s economic recovery and integration into the European Union.
