In a recent report, the climate change thinktank E3G highlighted the need for the United Kingdom to prioritize the establishment of domestic direct reduced iron (DRI) production facilities. The thinktank suggests that the UK government should allocate between £2.1 and £3.5 billion to support the creation of hydrogen-based DRI capacity, which could reach 5 million tonnes per year. Additionally, the investment would aid in developing 4.4 million tonnes of low-emissions primary steel capacity. This strategic move is seen as a crucial step towards achieving green iron and steel production, aligning with the country's broader climate goals.
