Major UK ports operator Peel Ports Group has raised concerns about delays in green infrastructure projects at its sites. These delays are attributed to complicated regulations and underfunded authorities, impacting projects at ports that handle a significant portion of the UK’s steel trade.
Peel Ports’ chief executive, Claudio Veritiero, highlighted that under-resourced regulators and stringent legislation are causing prolonged approval processes. One notable project affected is the UK’s largest roof-mounted solar operation at the Liverpool logistics hub, which faces a four-year delay due to grid capacity issues. Peel Ports handles around 70 million tonnes of cargo annually through its UK ports.
