The UK government is considering support for Nordic company Blastr Green Steel in establishing an iron pellet plant at the Port Talbot site in Wales. The proposal was discussed by UK Minister for Industry Sarah Jones during a parliamentary debate on May 1.
The plant would be located on surplus land at Port Talbot, where Tata Steel currently operates. Jones confirmed that discussions are ongoing to facilitate the project, alongside the government’s broader steel industry strategy.
The UK government has recently focused on British Steel in Scunthorpe, following its takeover on April 12. However, Jones emphasized that the steel fund remains active, with potential investments in direct reduced iron (DRI) production using hydrogen.
