Turkey exported 6.3 million tonnes of steel products between January and May 2025, marking an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Export revenue rose 7.9% year-on-year to $4.3 billion. May alone saw a 21.1% jump in volume to 1.4 million tonnes and a 9.2% rise in value to $922.8 million.
However, imports also climbed 6% to 7.5 million tonnes during the same period, with May imports up 24.6% year-on-year. This widened the trade gap, as the export-to-import coverage ratio fell from 80.7% to 71%.
Despite these challenges, Turkey retained its position as Europe’s top steel producer and the world’s seventh-largest. Domestic consumption dropped 4.7% to 15.5 million tonnes, though May saw a slight 1.1% uptick. Production declined 1.4% year-on-year to 15.4 million tonnes.
