Spain’s Tubos Reunidos is preparing a new temporary layoff scheme (ERTE) that could affect up to 850 employees at its Amurrio plant. The company attributes the move to declining orders caused by geopolitical instability and steep US tariffs on European steel.
The ERTE is described as a short-term production adjustment, with consultations beginning July 8. Tubos Reunidos previously consolidated operations at the Amurrio site to reduce costs and improve efficiency, but external shocks continue to weigh on performance.
Despite posting €28.6 million in net profit for 2024, down nearly 50% from the prior year, the company remains exposed to volatility in the oil and gas sector and global trade disruptions. Management says the measure aims to preserve industrial and social stability while adapting to market realities.
