Tokyo Steel leaves September prices unchanged for fourth month to stabilize market

Tokyo Steel Manufacturing, Japan’s largest electric-arc furnace steelmaker, said it will hold product list prices unchanged for September to help the domestic market find a floor after prolonged weakness in demand. It is the fourth straight month without changes. Prices for steel bars, including rebar, remain at 85,000 yen per metric ton, while H-shaped beams stay at 112,000 yen per ton. The company cited sluggish construction activity, driven by persistent labor shortages and constrained working hours, as well as slow shipments to manufacturers assessing the impact of U.S. tariff policy. Tokyo Steel noted tariff negotiations are progressing with several countries but that no agreement has been reached with China, keeping sentiment cautious. The producer’s monthly pricing is closely watched by regional rivals such as South Korea’s Posco and Hyundai Steel and China’s Baoshan Iron & Steel (Baosteel). The announcement comes with the dollar trading around 147.41 yen. Tokyo Steel’s stance follows recent declines in domestic rebar prices and soft downstream demand. The company signaled it would continue monitoring trade developments, political risks, and protectionist measures that could influence orders in the coming months.
