Thyssenkrupp Steel is set to convert a continuous casting line at its Duisburg-Nord site to accommodate medium-wide strip production. The company plans to install a divider, allowing for the casting of narrow slabs required for this specialized steel product.
The investment, estimated in the high double-digit million range, follows Thyssenkrupp’s decision to terminate its offtake agreement with HKM after 2032. Historically, the steelmaker has sourced narrow slabs from HKM to roll them into medium-wide strip at its Hohenlimburg site, catering to automotive and industrial customers.
Industry experts note that medium-wide strip production requires dedicated technology, offering advantages such as higher rolling pressure for harder steels. Thyssenkrupp remains the only European steelmaker producing this material on bespoke facilities, highlighting its commitment to precision manufacturing.
