Thailand’s Ministry of Industry has introduced a new regulation requiring imported hot rolled flat steel products intended for general structural use to meet the Thai Industrial Standards Institute's (TISI) 1479-2566 standard. This updated standard aims to ensure higher product quality and structural reliability, and will come into force 180 days after its announcement on June 27, 2025.
Under the new regulation, importers must secure a revised import license that aligns with the TISI 1479-2566 standard, signaling Thailand’s intent to elevate its industrial safety and material standards. The standard sets a five percent import duty on hot rolled flat steel products containing alloy elements, except for those that include titanium or chromium, or are non-alloyed, which will remain duty-free.
This policy shift may influence regional trade dynamics, especially among exporters seeking access to the Thai steel market. By enforcing the new benchmark, the government aims to promote fair competition, reduce the influx of substandard materials, and bolster national infrastructure development. The regulation also reflects Thailand’s broader commitment to regulatory transparency and long-term industrial resilience as it aligns domestic standards with international quality norms.
