Tata Steel UK has awarded contracts to ABB and Clecim for the supply of automation, electrification, and digital systems for a new pickling line at its Port Talbot site. This facility is part of Tata Steel’s broader £1.25 billion investment in sustainable steel production, backed by £500 million from the UK government.
The new pickling line will process hot-rolled coils, removing surface oxide layers to ensure a clean surface for further treatments. ABB will provide automation systems, electrification equipment, and digital tools, while Clecim will supply mechanical systems and core processing technology.
The project is expected to be operational by 2028, aligning with the launch of a 3.2-million-ton capacity electric arc furnace at the site. Tata Steel CEO Rajesh Nair emphasized that the facility will support the company’s transition to low-carbon steel production.
This initiative reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in the steel industry.
