Stegra, formerly known as H2 Green Steel, has confirmed its intention to begin commercial production by mid-2026 at its flagship plant in Boden, Sweden. The facility will produce both green steel and hot briquetted iron (HBI), with plans for 2.5 million tonnes of crude steel capacity via electric arc furnace and slabcaster, scalable to 5 million tonnes.
The plant will operate using direct reduced iron (DRI) and scrap, with some HBI sold to regional steelmakers. Stegra anticipates strong demand for low-emission steel, citing the efficiency of reducing embodied emissions in steel relative to its cost share in manufactured goods.
Despite widespread announcements of DRI/HBI projects, Stegra expects only a portion to materialize by 2030, reinforcing its strategy to explore growth opportunities beyond Sweden.
