In a recent development, José Noldin, the CEO of GravitHy, a prospective France-based low-emission ironmaker, has suggested that European steelmakers should relinquish ironmaking to specialized companies. Instead, they should concentrate on their primary strength of steelmaking and adding value.
GravitHy plans to launch its plant in Fos-sur-Mer by 2028, equipped with its own hydrogen production facility. The decision is influenced by the need for decarbonization and the availability of more favorable conditions for producing green iron outside of Europe. Noldin emphasizes the importance of government support and clear standards to prevent greenwashing and ensure a sustainable future for the steel industry.
