SSAB has delayed the start-up of its new steel mill in Luleå, Sweden, by 12 months, pushing the expected commissioning from the end of 2028 to the end of 2029. The postponement stems from delays in upgrading Sweden’s power transmission infrastructure.
Vattenfall Eldistribution, responsible for connecting the mill to the grid, cited setbacks in modernizing the Svartbyn grid station, which must be completed before the new Hällmyran station can go live. These challenges have extended the construction timeline, impacting SSAB’s project schedule.
Despite the delay, SSAB confirmed that the €4.5 billion investment remains unchanged. The new facility will replace the company’s existing blast furnace-based production with a more energy-efficient, fossil-free steelmaking process.
