The Spanish galvanised steel sector is urging the European Union to implement measures for reindustrialisation, emphasizing the importance of galvanised steel in advancing the energy transition and strengthening industries like construction, transport, and automotive. During the Spanish Technical Galvanisation Association's 60th annual conference, its president highlighted the sector's potential to drive Europe's growth while reducing dependence on external markets.
In 2024, Spanish galvanised steel production reached 548,000 tonnes, with 39% directed toward the energy sector and 25% toward construction. Despite challenges such as geopolitical instability, the sector remains a key player in the eurozone, operating 39 plants and supporting over 3,000 direct jobs. Industry leaders are advocating for increased adoption of galvanised steel, which currently accounts for less than 5% of steel usage in Spain, compared to 18% in the US. This highlights the untapped potential of the sector in contributing to Europe's industrial and environmental goals.
