Indian metals producer Shyam Metalics has announced plans to establish a modern wagon manufacturing facility in Kharagpur, West Bengal, with an annual production capacity of 4,800 wagons. The project will be developed under its subsidiary, Ramsarup Industries, with operations expected to commence by March 2026.
The facility will be built in two phases. The first phase will have a capacity of 2,400 wagons per year, approximately eight wagons per day, while the second phase will double the output to 4,800 wagons annually. The plant will manufacture various types of wagons, including flat, open, box, covered, tank, and specialized models, utilizing the "Uni-Flow" manufacturing layout to enhance efficiency.
This investment is part of Shyam Metalics' broader five-year capital expenditure strategy and aligns with India's "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives, aiming to boost domestic manufacturing and infrastructure development. The company emphasizes its commitment to innovation and sustainability, reinforcing its role in strengthening the country’s industrial capabilities.
By establishing this facility, Shyam Metalics seeks to enhance its footprint in the railway sector, contributing to India's transportation infrastructure while promoting self-reliance in critical industrial production.
