India's Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL) has officially commissioned a new blast furnace and sinter plant at its Jamuria steel mill in West Bengal, completing a $71 million expansion project. The new blast furnace has a capacity of 0.77 million metric tons per year and incorporates advanced technology, including modern coal dust injection. This addition is expected to enhance the company's margins by approximately INR 700 per metric ton. The new sinter plant, with a capacity of 1.11 million metric tons per year, is designed to process iron ore fines into feedstock for the blast furnace and features energy-efficient systems. With this expansion, Shyam Metalics aims to strengthen its position in the steel industry, contributing to its overall production capacity of 13.51 million metric tons per year across its seven manufacturing plants in India.
