Salzgitter has confirmed plans to ramp up production of military-grade steel in response to growing demand from Germany’s defence sector, particularly from manufacturers like Rheinmetall. The company has formed a dedicated Defence Task Force and is preparing for its first deliveries to the sector.
This move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and increased defence spending across Europe. Salzgitter aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers—especially Sweden’s SSAB, which currently dominates the market—and strengthen domestic resilience.
The company is expanding its portfolio of security steels and is in talks with component suppliers. It joins Dillinger Hüttenwerke, which has been certified for military supply since 2021, in supporting Germany’s rearmament efforts.
