PT Lautan Baja Indonesia has officially launched its hot rolled coil (HRC) production at its facility in Banten, western Java. The company commenced operations of a 1.5 million tonnes per year hot strip mill in mid-August, producing HRC with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 18mm and widths between 900 and 1,250mm.
The primary focus of PT Lautan is to supply HRC to the domestic market. The company, wholly owned by PT Lautan Steel Indonesia, plans to invest IDR 7 trillion (approximately $500 million) to enhance its production capabilities, including the installation of a 75-ton electric arc furnace and a 90-ton ladle refining furnace. This expansion aims to produce slabs with thicknesses of 210-230mm and widths of 900-1,250mm, alongside cold rolled and coated steel products, with a projected output of 3 million tonnes per year of finished flat products.
In addition to PT Lautan, another HRC producer, New Asia International, has also started production earlier this year, operating a similar capacity mill in Sidoarjo, eastern Java.
