Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steel producer, has applied for a government subsidy to support the construction of new electric-arc furnace (EAF) plants as part of its decarbonization strategy. The subsidy aims to assist hard-to-abate sectors in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Although the specific amount requested by Nippon Steel remains undisclosed, the Japanese government has allocated up to ¥500 billion ($3.3 billion) for the funding scheme, with applications closing on October 28. The company plans to build new EAF facilities at its Yahata and Hirohata plants, transitioning from traditional basic oxygen furnaces to EAFs to lower emissions in line with Japan's net-zero goals by 2050.
