Metinvest has signed a joint declaration with Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy to construct a large green steel plant in Piombino. This project aims to promote the industrial revitalization of the town and will feature an electric-arc-furnace with a capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per year of hot-rolled coil.
The total investment is expected to reach €2.5 billion. The plant will utilize recycled materials, including scrap, pig iron, and direct-reduced iron sourced from Ukraine. The project is supported by Italian export credit agency SACE and other financial institutions, with a Program Agreement expected by early 2025.
This initiative will strengthen the Italian steel industry and Ukraine’s mining operations, highlighting the potential of international cooperation in sustainable industrial development.
