Malaysia is collaborating with China to establish a government-to-government (G2G) mechanism aimed at enhancing capacity management and technology sharing in the steel industry. Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong emphasized the need to address the imbalance between local long product capacity and imported flat product volume. He also highlighted the importance of a carbon tax to support the industry’s green transition, which is crucial for meeting net-zero emissions goals by 2050. Additionally, Liew noted the challenges posed by declining construction steel consumption in China and the need for improved governance within the Malaysian steel sector.
