Tata Steel’s operations in the UK and the Netherlands have been significantly impacted by low steel prices. For the fiscal half-year ending September 30, Tata Steel UK reported a revenue of £600 million and an EBITDA loss of £147 million for the second quarter. Liquid steel production was 390,000 tonnes, with deliveries at 630,000 tonnes. The company attributed these losses to the compression in steel spreads and the temporary nature of operations as blast furnaces were decommissioned and steel stock was built up.
In the Netherlands, Tata Steel reported a revenue of £1,300 million and an EBITDA of £22 million for the second quarter. Liquid steel production was 1.66 million tonnes, with deliveries at 1.5 million tonnes. Despite the challenges, Tata Steel is progressing with its transition to green steel production, supported by a £500 million grant from the UK government. The company is also engaged in pilot projects to reduce carbon emissions and is in discussions with the government regarding support for decarbonization efforts.
