Liberty Steel is set to shut down the coke ovens at its plant in Dunaujvaros, Hungary, on June 12, in response to challenging market conditions. This move comes as the latest financial strain for the group, which has seen limited operational activity across Europe. The Dunaujvaros plant's coke ovens are currently the only active asset, with the site's blast furnace having been offline since the previous year.
The closure is expected to have a ripple effect across Liberty Steel's European operations, including the Galati site in Romania and the Ostrava mill in the Czech Republic, both facing their own operational challenges. The company's announcement last month to sell or recapitalize its European rolling mills and the mothballing of its merchant bar mill in Scunthorpe, UK, further underscores the ongoing restructuring within the group.
