Liberty Steel’s Galati plant in Romania experienced a technical failure on June 12, just days after restarting blast furnace No5 following over a year of downtime. The issue involved a detached “salamander”—a solidified mass of molten iron and slag—that blocked the furnace’s drainage outlets, prompting an emergency shutdown.
Despite the setback, Liberty stated that production could resume once the blockage is cleared, provided no further damage is found. The company emphasized that rolling mill operations remain on track, with over 15,000 tonnes of slab already produced and ready for processing.
