At EUROMETAL’s 75th Anniversary conference, Klöckner & Co CEO Guido Kerkhoff emphasized that steel is indispensable for a sustainable future. He argued that compared to alternatives like carbon fiber, steel is more environmentally friendly due to its recyclability and lower lifecycle emissions.
Kerkhoff highlighted that green steel—produced with low-emission technologies—can reduce CO₂ output by over 20% while increasing end-product costs by just 1%. However, he warned that demand for green steel is rising faster than supply, and mismatches between product types and customer expectations could emerge.
To address this, Klöckner & Co is expanding its Nexigen® portfolio, which offers transparent carbon footprint tracking across the entire supply chain. The company believes that only products with verified emissions data will meet future market demands and climate targets.
