The Italian long steel market remained subdued at the end of June, with prices largely unchanged amid weak demand and falling scrap values. Merchant bar and beam prices held steady week-on-week, while rebar base prices declined slightly to €230–240 per tonne ex-works. Including size extras, transaction levels ranged between €490 and €510 per tonne.
Market sentiment remains cautious. A major distributor expressed concern over inventory devaluation due to earlier purchases at higher prices, though some expect near-term price stability. Mills are hesitant to raise prices for fear of losing orders, despite eroding margins.
Looking ahead, supply may tighten in July as several mills plan maintenance stoppages. However, demand remains weak, and Italian longs are reportedly priced lower than in neighboring markets, though many producers are reluctant to sell outside Italy.
