Indonesia is set to expand its nickel production, particularly through high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL), but faces significant challenges. The country anticipates producing 325,000-345,000 tons of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) in 2024, up from 269,000 tons in 2023. However, the growth may be hindered by a shortage of sulphuric acid and the management of tailings waste. The demand for sulphuric acid is expected to rise to 7.12 million tons by 2025, while the HPAL process generates substantial waste, raising environmental concerns. Addressing these issues is crucial for Indonesia's ambitious nickel expansion plans.
