KolkataTata Steel Limited of India will double its overall steelmaking capacity to 40 million metric tonnes per year, modifying its global strategy to increase the share of domestic production to 75 percent of the total, from 62 percent currently. This decision was announced by company chairman N. Chandrasekeran to shareholders on July 16.
The bulk of the incremental production will come from the expansion of Indian mills at Jamshedpur, Kalinganagar, Gamaharia, and Meramandali. However, the chairman did not disclose the timelines for completing these expansion projects.
The company plans substantial investments in low-CO2 steelmaking technologies, including major initiatives in the UK and the Netherlands, contingent on government support. The modernization of the Port Talbot mill in the UK may result in 2,500 job losses due to the shift to a low emission electric arc furnace process.
