India's steel industry continues to lead the world in CO2 emissions, producing approximately 2.6 tons of CO2 for every ton of finished steel, which is 20-25% higher than emissions in China. This high emission intensity is primarily due to the reliance on coal-based direct reduced iron (DRI) processes. Despite being the second-largest steel exporter to the EU, India's emissions far exceed those of competitors like South Korea and Turkey. Major companies like Tata Steel and JSW Steel are setting ambitious targets for reduction, but significant financial support and a shift to cleaner technologies are crucial for real progress. India must invest around $120 billion to meet its steel production goals by 2030 while addressing its environmental impact.
