According to GMK Center, India's rolled steel imports surged to an eight-year high, reaching 6.5 million tons from April to November 2024, marking a 26.6% increase year-on-year, according to preliminary government data. Notably, China exported 1.96 million tons during this period, up 22.8% from the previous year. Japan also saw significant exports to India, doubling its supply to 1.4 million tons. In response to rising imports, India plans to impose a temporary safeguard duty of up to 25% on steel imports to protect domestic producers facing losses due to cheaper foreign products.
