India's scrap imports remained stable in August 2024, totaling 0.97 million tonnes, according to data from CYBEX. This figure indicates a consistent demand for scrap materials, despite fluctuations in other categories.
In July, India's ferrous scrap imports had surged by 38% month-over-month, reaching 0.87 million tonnes, largely due to delayed shipments from earlier bookings. However, the overall trend for the first seven months of the year showed a decline of 20% compared to the same period in 2023, with total imports at approximately 4.74 million tonnes.
The steady import levels in August suggest resilience in the market, as steel production also increased, rising to 11.32 million tonnes from 10.43 million tonnes in June. This growth reflects strong demand driven by the construction and manufacturing sectors, which rely heavily on ferrous scrap as a key raw material. Despite the stable import figures, analysts anticipate potential challenges ahead due to an oversupply of steel and changing market dynamics.
